Even in an era of highly effective modulator therapy, pulmonary infections remain a common and serious problem. In patients with cystic fibrosis, certain pathogens are especially dangerous and associated with significant pulmonary function decline and poor prognosis. Although, treatment options may be available, frequently these options inadequately eradicate and facilitate the development of antimicrobial resistance. Treatment is often further complicated by drug-drug interactions, drug hypersensitivities, and adverse events. This session will explore difficult cases, propose effective treatment options, and encourage audience participation to discuss strategies utilized with their patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the impact of previous antibiotic exposure on future treatment efficacy.
  • Describe therapeutic options for the treatment of difficult to treat infections in patients with cystic fibrosis.
  • Propose strategies to manage antimicrobial drug-drug interactions in patients receiving highly effective modulator therapies (HEMT).
