This session will highlight cutting edge gastrointestinal and hepatology-focused research in cystic fibrosis. The session will focus on common CF-related gastrointestinal and liver conditions, including research 1) elucidating potential mechanisms or therapies for gastrointestinal complications in individuals with cystic fibrosis or CFTR variants and 2) evaluating the effects of CFTR modulator therapy on gastrointestinal or liver complications of cystic fibrosis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Appraise effects of CFTR modulator therapy on liver-specific biomarkers and liver stiffness measurement in pediatric and adult individuals with cystic fibrosis
  • Compare histology and mucin gene expression between wild-type and CF mouse intestine to identify potential mechanisms for bowel obstruction and gut dysbiosis
  • Examine new approaches to treatment of pancreatic complications associated with CFTR mutations, including use of CFTR modulators for acute recurrent or chronic pancreatitis and use of non-porcine pancreas enzyme therapy for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
