Highly Effective Modulator Therapy (HEMT) has been available for eligible PwCF for over 3 years. We sought to discuss how airway clearance techniques and patient engagement have changed during this period across pediatric and adult care and where we are going next. We will describe how centers are trailing new airway clearance techniques by comparing passive and active treatments among pediatric and adult patients. With an overall reduction in engagement in Airway Clearance Therapy (ACT) amongst adults, we will hear from a large adult center on their experience re-engaging patients in treatments especially those who report being non-productive. Here we will examine how new education and assessment methods are being used, alongside some case study examples and the potential difficulties we are still facing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how patients and therapists are adapting airway techniques in the new era of modulator therapy; clinical practice, patient engagement techniques, patient’s attitude towards airway clearance and new ways of prompting airway clearance.
  • Discuss the use of passive and active airway clearance techniques being used among paediatric and adult patients and evaluate clinical outcomes.
  • Describe real world out-patient and hospital practice, evaluating the trends of PwCF doing less ACT and thinking about the future.
