Abigail Hoekstra MS CCLS is a Certified Child Life Specialist based in Fort Worth, Texas at Cook Children's Medical Center. Abigail serves in an outpatient setting in the pulmonary clinic, surgery clinic, and the palliative care clinic. As a CCLS, she is trained to help children and families cope with the emotional and psychological stress associated with hospitalization, illness, and medical treatments. This role invovles providing therapeutic play, preparation, support, and education to support children in managing anxiety and fear related to their healthcare experiences.
Her experties lies in understanding the developmental and emotional needs of children, ensuring that their hospital experience is as positive as possible. This includes explaining medical procedures in an age-appropriate manner, engaging in therapeutic activities, and supporting families throughout the treatment process. Abigail graduated from Texas A&M University with her undergraduate degree and completed her Masters in Child LIfe at Texas Woman's University. When she is not working Abigail enjoys spending time with her family and friends, sailing, and trying new restaurants. Abigail and her husband Stephen have 2 golden retrievers, Carolina and Howdy, 2 cats, Roger and El Tigre, and are expecting their first baby in December (it's a boy)!
