Dr. Joel Mermis is an Associate Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Since 2011, he has led both the Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Care Program and the CF Clinical Research Program at KUMC. Dr. Mermis completed his residency and served as Chief Resident at Emory University before returning to Kansas City in 2007 for fellowship. He joined the KUMC faculty and, in 2012, established the Therapeutics Development Network (TDN) CF Clinical Research Center. He serves on several local and regional CF focus committees including Program for Adult Care Excellence (PACE) grant review for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Dr. Mermis has been the principal investigator for more than 40 observational and therapeutic phase I, II, and III CF clinical trials. His recent clinical trial focus is on gene therapy studies centering on improving both the quality and longevity of life for all people with CF including those not eligible for modulators. Additionally, Dr. Mermis’ investigator-initiated research focuses on the physiological benefits of exercise in CF, particularly in the era of modulator therapies, and the evolving understanding of its long-term value in CF care.
