University of Colorado, School of Medicine
My name is Maksym Goryachok and I am a 4th-year medical student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, with a B.S degree in biochemistry/molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I am pursuing otolaryngology and am interested in host-pathogen interactions, particularly ways that commensal organisms alter pathogen function. This is an important field of study for me as it may one day allow for durable treatment of infections without frequent use of antibiotics. I am particularly interested in infection-prone populations such as those who have cystic fibrosis, given the highly altered microbiome and pathogen susceptibility. I have decided to take a dedicated research year to further explore these interactions and solidify my research background. As a future physician, I intend to be dedicated to not only my patients but ways to improve their lives through research, particularly in translational and cross-collaborative environments.
Separate from my interests in infection, I am also interested in medical device manufacturing and currently operate a service developing emerging product prototypes with a variety of manufacturing operations, and production process development, among many other things. I hope to combine all of the skills I have learned during my time as a medical student to better prepare myself for taking on a leadership role within my own eventual research endeavors.
