Nationwide Children's Hospital
My name is Karen Kanke. I am a research associate in the Vaidyanathan Lab in the Center for Gene Therapy at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I earned my bachelor’s degree in biology at Capital University. My previous research at Capital University includes studies on determining the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in the environment, characterizing genes in Phyllostachys edulis, exploring mechanisms affecting the oral microbiome, and researching the effect of high altitude on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. In the Vaidyanathan Lab I have assisted in the development of genome editing approaches to treat CF and other genetic diseases. My current work focuses on efficient gene insertion of short ssDNA templates to correct CFTR mutations in airway basal cells. My other areas of interest are researching early detection and treatment methods for Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
