Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham & Women's Hospital
I am the Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at the combined Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Center. I am also Director of the Bridges Adult Transition Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, providing age-appropriate care and transitional care support to all adult survivors of congenital or pediatric acquired chronic illness. I am also a general med-peds trained pulmonologist who cares for both children and adults. My clinical and research interests involve all aspects of cystic fibrosis care. I am on the CFF global health advisory board and part of the International CF training committee (ICFTN). I lead a multidisciplianry team from the US and collaborate with providers in Jordan with the goal of improving life expectancy and quality of life for people with CF in Jordan. I am the Director of the Therapeutic Development Network locally and at a national level, I am the Chair of the Protocol Review Committee. I was also recently the North American lead of two phase 2 clinical trials. I am focused on preventative care and complications associated with aging and from lifesaving pulmonary therapies, including nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. I recently completed a study involving comprehensive hearing health assessment at our adult CF center. Current and future work involves aging related research and educational opportunities.
Patient safety and Quality Improvement (QI) are also a central focus of my work, including my early involvement in the mental health task force at the CFF. I am interested in quality care initiatives and outcomes research, leading a multi-disciplinary group of health care professionals in improving consistency in cystic fibrosis care, as well as the care of those with chronic illness. I am currently involved with Leadership and Learning Collaborative sponsored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) involving lung transplant, part of ICFTN as noted above and belong to the CF Learning Network (CFLN). As a participating program in the CFLN, I serve as the Physician Leader. I am responsible for ensuring institutional/ departmental support for participation in the CFLN; provide input and oversight of administrative tasks including data entry and reporting; secure financial recognition and support of the QI Leader and Patient/ Family Partners; and provide leadership and mentorship to team members. We are currently focused on acknowledging and addressing bias and providing support and resources to help people with CF in our community accurately self-identify. We were previously involved in a multi-center quality improvement collaborative to develop a standardized program to transition adolescents from a pediatric to an adult medical home. We also initiated a comprehensive exercise program and continue to incorporate exercise into our daily clinical care recommendations, including the organization of 10 people with CF running the Boston Marathon.
