Dr. Thomas J. Sferra is the Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Sferra received his M.D. from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 1986. He completed his pediatric residency and fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at The Ohio State University and Childrens Hospital (now Nationwide Childrens Hospital) in Columbus, Ohio. From 1990 to 1993 he was a post-doctorial research fellow in the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. During that period of time Dr. Sferra's research focused on the control of expression of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. As a faculty member in the Divisions of Molecular Medicine and Pediatric Gastroenterology in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University, he continued to be involved in this area of research and participated in one of the early clinical gene therapy trials for cystic fibrosis. From 2006 to 2012, Dr. Sferra was a faculty member at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He held the Children's Hospital Foundation Griffin Family Chair in Gastroenterology and was the Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program. In 2012, Dr. Sferra moved to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is the Martin and Betty Rosskamm Chair in Pediatric Gastroenterology. Dr. Sferra leads the gastroenterology component of the multidisciplinary care of patients within the UH Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Center. Dr. Sferra has authored more than 125 scientific articles and book chapters. Dr. Sferra's clinical interests involve the gastrointestinal and nutritional concerns of children and adults with cystic fibrosis and other pancreatic and intestinal disorders. His areas of research are the use of large datasets to investigate the epidemiology of pediatric gastrointestinal diseases and the discovery of novel therapies of gastrointestinal disorders.
