Dr Shilpa Sood is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College, New York. She is also an attending pediatric gastroenterology physician at Maria Fareri Children’s hospital in Valhalla, New York. She completed her Pediatrics residency and Pediatric Gastroenterology fellowship training at Maria Fareri children’s hospital at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. She completed her undergraduate and medical education in India.
She has a keen interest in nutrition and intestinal rehabilitation. She makes daily rounds in the Neonatal ICU and is a part of the intestinal rehabilitation program for short gut patients at her hospital. She is one of the DIGEST awardees (2019-2022). During her training years she was exposed to patients with CF through the CF center at Maria Fareri children’s hospital and has been a part of the multidisciplinary CF team since. She is fascinated by the varied presentations of CF at different ages and its effects on their nutrition and quality of life both short term and long term. She is currently working on a research project involving role of the microbiome of CF patients with DIOS and pancreatic insufficiency.
As a trainee pediatric gastroenterology fellow she designed the protocol and performed the first colonoscopic fecal microbiota transplant in children with recurrent clostridium difficile infections at her hospital. She worked with FDA to get an IND required for its approval. Given her strong interest in intestinal rehabilitation she looks forward to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to monitor their growth, nutritional status, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. She looks forward to maintain and expand her commitment to the care of patients with CF.
Dr Sood is heavily invested in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows’ didactics and have designed research projects with them. She has presented multiple posters at national and international conferences. She has also performed literary work for NASPGHAN and written a review chapter for the fellows review book, written a power point slide set for resident education. She was a member of the Professional education Committee of NASPGHAN and a CME reviewer for Journal of pediatric gastroenterology hepatology and nutrition (JPGN).
Dr Sood is a member of NASPGHAN- North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition. Outside of work, Dr Sood loves music and dance. She enjoys spending time with her family, specially her two young children.
