Denise M. Kay, PhD, Research Scientist, has worked with the New York State Newborn Screening Program at the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health since 2009. Her background is in genetics and genetic epidemiology. Her work is focused on addressing challenges in newborn screening, including improving current methods and algorithms, and developing and implementing assays including expanded genetic analysis for existing and 'new' conditions. Dr. Kay was responsible for onboarding gene sequence analysis for cystic fibrosis screening in 2017, resulting in >80% reduction in referrals. She is active in the national newborn screening community, working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development and the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL).
