Dr. Esther obtained his MD and PhD degrees from Emory University then completed Pediatric residency and Pediatric Pulmonology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where he has been on faculty since 2004. His clinical and research activities have a strong focus on cystic fibrosis (CF), and he has roles as director of the UNC Pediatric CF Care Center as well as the UNC CF Research Development Program (RDP). Dr. Esther’s laboratory serves as a CF Foundation funded Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic National Resource Center to measure concentrations of drugs and disease related biomarkers in biological samples for investigators at UNC and across the world. Dr. Esther is particularly interested in the pharmacokinetics of CFTR modulators in blood and target tissue as well as the factors that influence modulator concentrations, such as pharmacogenetic variation, pregnancy, and drug interactions.
