This session will focus on cutting-edge model systems designed to study extrapulmonary physiology and pathophysiology in cystic fibrosis (CF), covering various aspects such as infection dynamics, microbiological interactions, immune responses, and understanding CFTR biology for the path to a cure.
We will explore advancements in human in vitro/ex vivo models and animal models, showcasing innovative approaches that enable us to investigate the complexities of CFTR dysfunction, thereby enhancing our understanding of CF pathogenesis and treatment strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the significance of model systems in elucidating non-pulmonary manifestations of cystic fibrosis (CF) and their role in advancing our knowledge of the disease.
  • Discuss the various model systems available for studying extrapulmonary physiology and pathophysiology in CF and assess their strengths and limitations.
  • Analyze the impact of CFTR dysfunction on different organ systems, such as the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas and discuss how these insights can inform the development of targeted therapeutic interventions for CF patients.
